ABOUT B1M
Who We Are
Bawat Isa Mahalaga (B1M) is a movement of citizens and groups of citizens, whose mission is to pursue transformation of the Filipino nation. It believes transformation will take place if more Filipinos will think and act on the basis of their biblical identity as having been each “created in the image of God” (bawat isa mahalaga at bawat Pilipino mahalaga), and will earnestly exercise their constitutional authority as the Sovereign Filipino People in order to establish a “just and humane society” (Preamble, Constitution). Its transformation roadmap, among other goals, intends to sharpen citizen participation in governance and promote genuine public service and accountability, thus bringing about greater flourishing (more holistic development) of the Filipino people.
B1M is a movement of citizens and groups of citizens, that recognizes the power and desire of God to transform the Filipino nation. The movement springs from the collective identity of individual Filipino citizens as the Sovereign Filipino People from whom all government authority proceeds, and who have expressed their vision of a “just and humane society” in the Constitution. This identity taps into deep waters, sourced from the truth that every human being is “created in the image of God” (Imago Dei). B1M believes that all human beings have the potential to respond positively to every call that invokes the character of God – His love, His mercy, His justice, His faithfulness.
B1M believes that when increasingly more image-bearing Filipino citizens, in communities and as individuals, think and act in such a way that reflects godly character as mirrored in the Constitution, then transformation of the nation would have been taking place. They will regard themselves as mahalaga, indeed, bawat isa mahalaga. These citizens will work towards a “just and humane society” as their highest goal for the Filipino nation. They will try to work out this “just and humane society” as a foretaste of shalom, the life of completeness, peace and prosperity willed by God in scriptures, because they passionately believe Jesus’ model prayer for God’s kingdom to come on earth. They will engage in civic education and apply ethical principles in public life. They will seek to bridge differences among Filipinos and pave the way for healing of the nations’ wounds.
This B1M lifeview is fully consistent with the Constitution. The Constitution recognizes an Almighty God whose help is invoked. It highly regards “love” as an important value that must be present in the nation’s governance regime. It affirms the spiritual nature of man in several places, and requires the State to protect the “sanctity” of family life.
Godly governance, which B1M promotes, is not religiosity but the careful devotion to expressions of the following truths in public life: profound respect for human dignity, man’s stewardship of all creation, the deliberate dismantling of structural evil, the careful and purposive establishment of human institutions that will promote justice and the raising of the nation in righteousness. It is a collective journey that can be taken by all peoples of faith, even with those who are still seeking the relevance of faith in their lives.
B1M seeks true empowerment of the Filipino people – by propagating an understanding of the constitutional power dynamics, where aside from the truth that they are the true source of temporal public authority, B1M will also promote the outworking of public accountability and the principle that public officials are servants and not kings. It will consistently assert the binding covenant of the Philippine Constitution, and that the duty of the State is to enact and equitably apply just laws.
